Community Policing Chp. 7

The term Partnerships refers to the collaboration that takes place between - ANS-Police officers,
community members and groups, other government agencies, nonprofits, service providers,
private businesses, the media, and stakeholders.

Community Policing cannot succeed without - ANS-Partnerships. Traditional policing expected
the community members to remain in the background.

Crime and disorder were viewed as police matters, best left to professionals. That meant most
citizen-police interactions were "NEGATIVE CONTACTS"

After all, people do not call the police when things are going well.

A citizens only opportunity to interact with officers was a victim of crime, as an involved party in
some other emergency situation, or as the subject of some enforcement action such as
receiving a traffic ticket.

Partnerships usually result in a more effective solution to a problem because of the shared -
ANS-Responsibilities, resources, and goals.

Collaboration occurs when a number of agencies and individuals make a commitment to work -
ANS-Together and contribute resources to obtain a common, long term goal.

Stakeholders are those people who have an interest - ANS-In what happens in a particular
situation

Stakeholders might include - ANS-School board members, business leaders, elected officials,
neighborhood-watch/block clubs, community activists, the attorney general

Community policing relies on active community involvement, recognizing that such involvement
- ANS-Gives new dimension to crime control activities. While police continue to handle crime
fighting and law enforcement responsibilities, the police and community work together to modify
conditions that can encourage criminal behavior.

Effective community policing depends on "optimizing positive contact" between - ANS-Patrol
officers and community members. Patrol cars are only one method of conveying police services.

Police departments may supplement automobile patrols with foot, bicycle, scooter, and
horseback patrols and admini-stations to bring police closer to the community.
