Reasons for establishing effective communications with the media - ANS-*Quick way to reach

Guidelines an officer should follow when making a statement to the media - ANS-*Avoid
personal opinion
*Give consistent information to all media outlets
*Remember anything said can appear on the record
* Be prepared for reporters to ask questions you cannot answer
Elements of the offense that constititute domestic violence in Ohio - ANS-*Knowingly cause or
attempt to cause physical harm to a family or househould member
*Recklessly cause serious physical harm to a family or household member
*By threat or force, knowingly causing a family or household member to believe that the offender
will cause imminent physical harm to the family or household member
Four categories of persons who fall within the meaning of family or household member - ANS-*A
spouse, a person living as a spouse, or a former spouse of the offender
*A parent, foster parent, or a child of the offender, or another person related by consanquinity
(i.e. blood) or affinity (i.e. marriage) to the offender
*A parent or a child of a spouse, person living as a spouse, or former spouse of the offender, or
another person related by consanquinity or affinity to a spouse, person living as a spouse, or
former spouse of the offender
Four elements, which should be used to determine the primary physical aggressor in a domestic
violence incident - ANS-*Any history of domestic violence or other violent acts by either person
involved in the alleged offense, that the officer can reasonably ascertain
*Whether the alleged violence was caused by a person acting in self-defense
*Each pereson's fear of physical harm, if any, resulting from the other person's use or history pf
the use of force against any person and the reasonableness of that fear
*The comparative severity of any injuries suffered by the persons involved in the alleged offense
Temporary Protection Orders (TPO) - ANS-Is an order from the court that is available after a
family or household member is charged with a violent or sexually oriented offense and it is good
for the length of the case
TPO - ANS-*Removes the suspect from the shared residence
*It can be received by the victim at any time starting with the arraignment but it is over when the
case is over
, *Can be requested by: The complainant, alleged victim, family or household member of the
victim, a peace officer may file the motion on behalf of the victim if the victim is to injured, the
court on its own motion
Criminal Protection Order (CRPO)
(crpo is like tpo for non-family/household) - ANS-Issued by the court after a
non-family/household member is charged with a violent, menacing, or sexually oriented criminal
offense
Civil Protection Order (CPO) - ANS-*Obtained through the domestic relations or common pleas
*Broader, can be in effect for up to 5 years
*Person may initially file for a TPO and then petition for a CPO. TPO becomes invalid if CPO
issued.
*A peace officer will need to charge with a violation of the CPO if both on file.
*Two leves: Ex Parte and Final-both enforceable
Stalking Protection Orders- Stalking or Sexually Oriented Offense Protection Order (SSOOPO) -
ANS-*Protects the victim of stalking and sexually oriented offenses from a non-family or
non-household member
*Issued through the common pleas court
*Available for victims in the absence of criminal charges
*It has the same two levels as CPO-Ex Parte and Final
Crisis state has three characteristics - ANS-*The persons behavior is at an intense emotional
and irrational level and brought on in response to a critical incident
*The critical incident occurred within 24 to 48 hours of the change in behavior
*The person perceives the situation as overwhelming and a threat to his/her pyschological
and/or physical well-being
Causes of damage or stress to a person's brain that result in a person's mental capacity being
compromised - ANS-*Brain Chemistry
*Developmental disabilities
*Deterioration of the brain
*Damage to the brain through blunt force
*Damage to the brain through severe stress and trauma
*Unbearable stress that causes suicidal thinking or actions
*Substance abuse
Factors that coupled with mental illness produce the greatest increase in the potential for
violence - ANS-*Male, forty years of age or older, with untreated psychosis (paranoid
