, QUESTION 1

1.1. Children’s literature is made up of written and oral texts that are meant for children
and are shaped around their ways of understanding the world. These stories are usually
enjoyable and carry important values, while also helping children grow in language,
thinking, and emotional development. In the South African context, children’s literature
also supports identity, culture, and language awareness, making it a valuable tool in
shaping young minds (Evans et al., 2017:2).

1.2. Teachers can make a strong effort to move away from gender stereotypes by picking
books that have characters in non-traditional roles. For example, books where boys
express their feelings openly or girls lead exciting adventures give children new ideas
about what is possible. Teachers can also hold discussions with learners about what they
notice in the stories and ask them to reflect on whether these roles are fair or outdated.
This type of critical engagement helps children build better awareness of equality and
fairness (Evans et al., 2017:21).

1.3. One benefit of multimodal storytelling is that it helps children understand stories more
clearly by using different senses. For example, a story told using words, music, gestures,
and pictures can help children remember the content more easily and stay engaged
throughout. Another advantage is that it caters to different kinds of learners in one
activity—those who learn through listening, seeing, or moving can all take something
valuable from the story (Evans et al., 2017:30).

is now found everywhere. The story does not just entertain, but it gives an explanation for
