Critical Thinking Assignment
1. There were a few definitions of critical thinking discussed by Fisher in this text. The one I chose
to focus on was the definition given by Richard Paul. He describes critical thinking as an upgrade
of one’s original thinking where the individual consciously adds to the intellectual aspect of their
thoughts. This is what has been referred to as “thinking about thinking”. It is a way to improve
the results of your decisions and reflect on them wisely.

a. 1.7.1: In Case 1, Andy does not display reflective thinking for the most part. He relies
entirely on what the salesperson tells him about the car and it is mentioned that he does
not know much on his own. This would be passivity. However, in case 2, he displays
reflective thinking. He actively takes part in his decision making process not relying
entirely on others. He gets multiple opinions which shows he is persistent and careful.
b. 1.7.2: Yes, in Case 2, he does identify everything according to Glaser’s list of skills but
that is not as much the situation in case 1.
c. 1.7.3: I would say he reacted more reasonably in Case 2. He considered multiple
opinions especially because he didn’t not have much personal knowledge regarding the
subject. He made sure he was not rushing to any conclusions or decisions and took his
time and reflected upon his own thoughts and took others help.
3. Critical thinking is referred to as “critico-creative-thinking” because this term does not have any
negative connotation as critical thinking does. It also emphasizes the need for imagination in
order to think outside the box which is the true meaning of critical thinking. It is a term with a
more positive connotation.
1. Paraphrase one of the traditional definitions of critical thinking discussed by
Fisher and explain it to the class
2. Answer questions 1.7, 1.7.1, 1.7.2, and 1.7.3 on page 9 of Fisher’s text
3. Why is critical thinking referred to as “critico-creative-thinking”?
