Environmental Politics
1. What is meant by ecological modernisation? (10 marks)
Ecological modernisation is the idea that economic growth and environmental protection
can go hand in hand. In the past, many people believed that in order to develop
industries and grow the economy, the environment had to suffer. However, ecological
modernisation argues that we can use technology, innovation, and better policies to
reduce pollution, manage natural resources wisely, and still improve people's lives.
It focuses on making industries and businesses more eco-friendly by using cleaner
energy sources, recycling waste, and designing products that have less impact on
nature. Governments, businesses, and scientists work together to find ways to produce
goods more efficiently without harming the planet. Instead of seeing environmental
protection as a burden, this approach treats it as an opportunity to create jobs, improve
technology, and make society healthier.
For example, using renewable energy like solar and wind power instead of coal and oil
is part of ecological modernisation. So is creating electric cars that reduce air pollution
or building houses that use less water and electricity. The main idea is that we don’t
have to choose between a strong economy and a clean environment – we can have
both if we do things the right way.
