The issue that I’ve decided to investigate is, how does someone’s mental health influence
their propensity towards drug use and abuse? How does social structure and class influence the
rates of drug use and abuse? The reason why I’ve wanted to lean more towards investigating
towards these questions is because we have multiple people out here that are using drugs to help
themselves with their mental health and helping them cope better in life which isn’t a good way
to go because it does spread to other people and they would die from overdose.
When identifying the social science principles that apply to my issue is because people
use the drug use and abuse due to depression and PTSD, to where it’s a coping mechanism to
them and it’s also a “self-medication” to them as well where they have different conditions like
anxiety and etc. They tend to use these substances because it is hard for them to manage the pain
they go through and different types of emotions and/or situations in life. Sometimes using too
much can cause them to have a drug overdose because once they get out of control with it and
they start finding new drugs to use that’s basically already out they start deep searching and
asking people around if they are doing this, or are you on that and people will get looks and
stares because of that.
A way that the social structure and class influence the rates of drug abuse and use is
because of some higher families income and the ability to access or purchase substances through
pharmacies and things like that say whenever they are sick and they want someone that will help
them through it and they go straight to pills and fentanyl and things like that because this type of
drug will slow the brain down and they will become numb and not feel anything and knowing
that’s what they want to happen to them.
