,For AS Psychology Paper 1 on Introductory Topics in Psychology, focus on the following key areas to revise
effectively:
1. Social Influence
Conformity: Understand key studies (e.g., Asch’s conformity experiments) and the types of conformity
(e.g., compliance, identification, internalization). Focus on factors that influence conformity, such as
group size, unanimity, and confidence.
Obedience: Review Milgram’s study on obedience, the factors that influence obedience (e.g., authority,
proximity, and legitimacy), and the ethical issues surrounding such research.
Group Behaviour: Study topics like social roles (e.g., Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Experiment), social
loafing, and bystander behaviour. Understand the factors influencing helping behaviour and the
bystander effect.
2. Memory
Models of Memory: Be familiar with the multi-store model of memory (Atkinson and Shiffrin) and the
working memory model (Baddeley and Hitch). Understand the components and processes involved in
each model (e.g., sensory register, short-term memory, long-term memory).
Encoding, Storage, and Retrieval: Focus on how information is encoded (e.g., semantic, acoustic),
stored, and retrieved. Review research on the duration and capacity of different types of memory.
3. Attachment
Stages of Attachment: Understand Bowlby’s attachment theory, the concept of monotropic attachment,
and the stages of attachment (e.g., pre-attachment, indiscriminate, discriminate, multiple).
Strange Situation: Study Ainsworth’s Strange Situation and the types of attachment styles (secure,
insecure-avoidant, and insecure-resistant). Understand the factors influencing attachment, including
temperament and caregiver responsiveness.
4. Approaches in Psychology
The Behaviourist Approach: Understand classical conditioning (Pavlov) and operant conditioning
(Skinner), and how these theories apply to learning and behaviour modification.
The Cognitive Approach: Review cognitive models of memory, perception, and problem-solving. Study
the information-processing model and the role of schemas.
The Biological Approach: Focus on the role of genetics, neurotransmitters, and brain structures in
influencing behaviour. Understand research on the brain (e.g., localisation of function, neuroplasticity)
and behaviour.
5. Research Methods
Types of Research: Be familiar with different research methods such as experiments, case studies,
observational studies, and surveys. Understand the strengths and limitations of each method.
Sampling Techniques: Study different sampling methods (e.g., random, stratified, convenience) and
their advantages and disadvantages.
By revising these key areas, you’ll gain a solid understanding of the introductory topics in psychology, helping
you succeed in Paper 1.
