MATH 225 - STATISTICAL REASONING FOR THE
HEALTH SCIENCES WEEK 4 QUESTIONS WITH
CORRECT ANSWERS 2025
Experiment - correct answers-An action, or trial, through which specific results (counts, measurements,
or responses) are obtained.

Outcome - correct answers-Is the result of a single trial in a probability

Sample Space - correct answers-The set of all possible outcomes of a probability experiment

Event - correct answers-A subset of a sample space; It may consist of one or more outcomes

Simple Event - correct answers-An event consisting of only one outcome

Fundamental Counting Principle (FCP) - correct answers-if one event can occur "m" ways and a second
event can occur "n" ways, then the number of ways that two events can occur together is m x n

Classical (Theoretical) Probability - correct answers-Used when each outcome in a sample space is
equally likely to occur

P(E) = Number of outcomes in event E / Total number of outcomes in sample space

Empirical (Statistical) Probability - correct answers-Expressed as the frequency of an event divided by
the total frequency. It is based on observations obtained from probability experiments.

P(E) = Frequency of event E / Total frequency ; =f/n

Law of Large Numbers (LLN) - correct answers-As an experiment is repeated over and over, the empirical
probability of an event approaches the theoretical (actual) probability of the event.

Subjective Probability - correct answers-Uses a probability value based on an educated guess or
estimate, employing opinions and inexact information.

Range of Probability Rule - correct answers-The probability of an event E is between 0 and 1, inclusive

Complement of an Event - correct answers-Consists of all possible outcomes in a sample space that are
NOT part of the event (E' = E prime)

Mutually Exclusive - correct answers-Events that cannot occur at the same time ; can be no overlap

Independent Event - correct answers-The outcome of one event does NOT affect the outcome of the
second event

Dependent Event - correct answers-The outcome of one event does affect the outcome of the second
event

Trial - correct answers-One round of an experiment
