Criteria for Classification:
1. Shape
a. Simple squamous: One cell layer with a bunch of flat cells. Found in lining of
alveoli, lining of blood vessels, kidney tubules.
b. Simple columnar epithelia: tall cells, one layer, found in digestive system.
Adaptation is secretion and absorption.
2. Number of layers
a. Simple: One layer
b. Stratified: Multiple
c. Pseudostratified: Look as if its multiple but it’s one

Epithelium of the skin: Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium.
Connective tissue: Two main elements [ECM, cells]
 ECM is divided into 2 things:
o Ground Substance
 Glycosaminoglycans
 Glycoproteins
 Proteoglycans (combo of proteins and carbs).
o Protein Fibers
 Collagen: strength, support
 Elastic: Gives ability to stretch and extend.
 Reticular: Webs that trap things and fill in spaces seen in lymphatic
structures
