ANP 1106 Topic 1 Anatomical Terms
3 common body planes (2 vertical, 1 horizontal) - ANS sagittal plane
frontal plane
transverse (horizontal) plane
\4 Quadrants of the abdominopelvic cavity - ANS right upper, left upper, right lower, left lower
\9 regions of abdominopelvic cavity - ANS R. hypochondriac — Epigastric — L. hypochondriac;
R. lumbar — Umbilical — L. lumbar;
R. inguinal — Hypogastric — L. inguinal
\abdominopelvic cavity - ANS abdominal cavity and inferior pelvic cavity
\Anatomical position - ANS Body erect, feet slightly apart, palms facing forward, thumbs point
away from body
\Anterior (Ventral) - ANS Toward or at front end of the body; in front of
ex. breast bone anterior to spine
\Cavity with the least protection - ANS Abdominal cavity
\Cranial Cavity - ANS Enclosed by skull, houses the brain
\Deep - ANS Away from the body surface; more internal
ex. lungs are deep to the skin
\Distal - ANS farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the
body trunk
ex. the knee is distal to the thigh
\Dorsal body cavity - ANS contains the cranial cavity and spinal column, cavities are continuous
and well protected
\Frontal Plane (CORONAL) - ANS Vertical plane, divides the body into anterior and posterior
parts
\Inferior (caudal) - ANS Away from head end or toward lower part of a sturcture or the body;
below
ex. Navel is inferior to the chin
\inferior pelvic cavity - ANS contains some reproductive organs, bladder, and rectum
\Intermediate - ANS Between a more medial and a more lateral structure.
Ex: The collarbone is intermediate between the breastbone and shoulder.
\Lateral - ANS away from the midline of the body; on the outer side of
ex. The arms are lateral to the chest
\Medial - ANS Toward or at the midline of the body: on the inner side of
ex. The heart is medial to the arm
\Oblique section - ANS cuts made diagonally between the horizontal and the vertical planes
\Parasagittal plane - ANS Divides body into unequal right and left sides, off the midline
\Posterior (Dorsal) - ANS toward or at the back of the body; behind
ex: the heart is posterior to the breastbone
\Proximal - ANS Closer to the origin of the body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the
body trunk
