Explain the situations in which a physician may order a Blood transfusion.
In certain situations, when patients are experiencing severe anemia due to acute blood
loss from surgeries, traumas, or chronic conditions, physicians may order a blood
transfusion. Blood transfusions may also be recommended when a patient’s hemoglobin
levels are critically low, causing weakness, dizziness, and shortness of breath.
Transfusion may also be needed during surgeries or other medical procedures that cause
significant blood loss. These decisions are based on patient assessments, confirming the
need through blood tests, and considering risks and benefits. According to guidelines
from the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), transfusions are necessary to
replenish blood volume or specific components and ensure improved oxygen delivery or
critical support during medical procedures.
What do you think is the most responsible reason that a blood transfusion would be
ordered in this scenario? Support your answer with information from the case scenario
and the evidence.
In the case of Neela, the most likely reason for a blood transfusion would be severe
anemia due to multiple factors. Anemia is a condition that occurs when the body has a
low level of healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin (Shah & Modi, 2016). The first factor
will be Neela's recent surgery for a ruptured appendix. The significant blood loss has led
to extremely low hemoglobin levels and symptoms of anemia, such as weakness, fatigue,
and shortness of breath. This necessitates a blood transfusion to restore the red blood cell
count and improve oxygen delivery to tissues and organs. The second factor is her pre-
existing history of Beta-Thalassemia minor, which affects hemoglobin production and
