Sprain
Spasm
Muscle Injuries
Sprain
an injury to a joint where the ligament or capsule is over-stretched and can result in
mild to severe instability and selling around the corresponding joint. The concept of
Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation (RICE) are recommended until the swelling and
pain subside.
Spasm
is a prolonged involuntary contraction of a muscle that is often painful. Rest, ice,
compression are often helpful acutely or until the ____________subsides.
Anterior Cruciate Ligament Knee Injuries
partial or full tear of the ____________most commonly caused by a blow to the lateral
side of the knee, resulting in a valves force. this mechanism of injury usually results in
additional injuries to the medial collateral ligament and the medial meniscus (the
unhappy triad). Rotation of the femur on a planted tibia/foot is a common mechanism
of injury to the ____________as well
ACL (anterior cruciate ligament knee injury) CONTRAINDICATIONS- without surgical
repair:
, open chain terminal knee extension (from 60 degrees to 0 degrees) with resistance to
the distal leg. Squatting between 60-90 degrees causes increased anterior translation of
the tibia on the femur and subsequent stress to the ACL
ACL (anterior cruciate ligament knee injury) CONTRAINDICATIONS- with surgical
repair:
maximum protection phase - up to 10 weeks should be handled by a physical therapist
or licensed medical professional. Minimum protection phase is 10-24 weeks - avoid
pulling the tibia forward on the femur manually and avoid open chain high resistance or
terminal knee extension exercises (avid feet in straps or leg spring work)
Facet Joint Syndrome
characterized by a segmental hypo mobility (facet lock) causing secondary hyper mobile
segments with pain and pain referral.
Facet Joint Syndrom SYMPTOMS are
often occurs with, or because of , disc degeneration. usually painful with extension
especially combined with rotation and side-bending
Facet Joint Syndrom CONTRAINDICATIONS
avoid extension of the spine
Herniated Nucleus Pulposis - HNP a/k/a Herniated or Bulging Disc
annular fibers weakened, nucleus loses volume and narrows
What are the 3 stages of Herniated Nucleus Pulposis - HNP a/k/a Herniated or Bulging
Disc
