This presentation will walk the audience through a plague outbreak scenario
affecting the community of Crab Apple Valley. Information will be provided
related to outbreak recognition, investigation, surveillance, control, prevention,
and maintenance. The outbreak data used in this presentation were obtained
from the Crab Apple Valley: Communicable outbreak simulation scenario
video (Western Governors University [WGU], n.d.).

D:
This presentation will discuss the components of the Crab Apple Valley
outbreak scenario case definition, including clinical manifestations, lab
diagnostics, and Person/Place/Time (PPT) distribution.
There will be a description of the ten steps of an outbreak investigation with
specific examples from this scenario, and the different methods of
surveillance: passive versus active surveillance including a discussion of how
they differ.
Suspect and probable disease cases will be defined and differentiated, and
related
data from this outbreak will be presented.
Additionally, disease mode of transmission and utilization and calculation of
cumulative incidence will be presented, along with a purpose statement for this
disease outbreak investigation. This will be followed by a proposed study
design and study design justification for this outbreak.
A visual representation of collected data from this outbreak will be presented
in the form of an epi-curve histogram along with disease incubation period
information.
This presentation will define the various outbreak types and the differences
between
them.
Data about fatality rates, primary and secondary attack rates, and attack
occurrence from this outbreak will be shared and discussed.
, \Outbreak control measures will be reviewed as well as the plan for information
dissemination and communication. Finally, there will be a personal reflection of
the Crab Apple Valley outbreak analysis and investigation.
