EMT TEST #1 (Ch.1-8)
Acute Stress Reactions - ANS -Result of large-scale catastophes that trigger a strong emotional
response and develop in a very short time.
\Alarm Reaction - ANS -Fight-or-flight response. Pupils dialate, hr increases, bronchial
passages dialate. Blood sugar increases, digestive stystem slows and blood pressure rises.
Cortisol is produced to adapt and cope with stress
\Anatomy - ANS -The study of body structure
\Anterior - ANS -Front of the body
\ATP - ANS -AKA Adenosine Triphosphate. An organic compound used for a source of energy
for metabolic processes.
\Axillary - ANS -relating to the armpit
\Bilateral - ANS -On both sides
\Body Mechanics - ANS -the proper use of the body to facilitate lifting and moving and prevent
injury
\Brady- - ANS -Slow
\Capnia - ANS -Conditions of Carbon dioxide in blood
\Cardiopulmonary System (function) - ANS -The system containing the heart and lungs,
regulates blood flow and respiratory function.
\Cardiopulmonary System (structures) - ANS -Heart, lungs, pulmonary arteries, pulmonary
veins, aorta, trachea, and bronchi.
\Cumulative Stress Reaction - ANS -Results from sustained, recurring low-level stressors.
\Delayed Stress Reaction - ANS -AKA PTSD, shell shock, or battle fatigue. Triggered by a
specific incident, but signs and symptoms may not appear for extended periods of time.
\Designated Agent - ANS -An EMT or other person authorized by a Med. DIrector to give
medications and provide emergency care.
\Diseases of Concern - ANS -Hepatitis (A,B,C), Tuberculosis, AIDS, Chicken Pox (varicella),
Ebola, German Measles (Rubella), Influenza (Swine and avian flu), Meningitis, Mumps,
Pneumonia, Staphylococcal skin infections, Whooping Cough (Pertussis).
\Distal - ANS -Farther away from torso
\Emia - ANS -Condition of blood
\Emotional Stages - ANS -Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance.
\EMS has a role in what public safety issues? - ANS -Inury prevention (youth and geriatric),
Public Vaccination, and Disease Surveillance
\Enceph- - ANS -Pertaining to the brain.
\Endocrine System (function) - ANS -System of glands and hormone production in the body.
\Endocrine System (structures) - ANS -Pituitary gland, pineal gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid
gland, thymus gland, adrenal gland, pancreas, testes and ovaries.
\Endoplasmic Reticulum - ANS -A network of membranous tubules that function in protein and
lipid synthesis and have ribosomes attached.
\Evidence-based Research - ANS -Description of medical techniques or practices that are
supported by scientific evidence of their safety and efficacy.
, \Exhaustion Stage - ANS -Occurs when a stressor is prolonged or particularly severe. Results in
enlargement of adrenal glands, wasting of lymph nodes, and bleeding gastric ulcers.
\Expressed Consent - ANS -Consent given by adults who are of legal age and mentally
comptetent to make a rational decision in regard to their medical well-being
\Fowler - ANS -
\Globin - ANS -Protein in Hemoglobin
\Hemo - ANS -Blood
\Hepatitis (Types and Contraction Style) - ANS -A - Contracted primarily through food or water
contaminated with fecal matter.
B - Contracted through blood spills. (Vaccine available)
C- Contracted through blood and other bodily fluids.
\How are the body systems made up? - ANS -Cells, tissues, organs working together.
\How does the blood flow through the heart? - ANS -
\Hyper - ANS -Abnormally increased
\Hypo- - ANS -Below normal
\Immune System (function) - ANS -The interacting combination of all body's ways of recognizing
cells, tissues, objects and organisms that are not part of itself, and initiating the immune
response to fight them
\Immune System (structures) - ANS -Thymus, Bone marrow, spleen, tonsils.
\Implied Consent - ANS -The consent presumed if a patient or patient's parent or guardian
would give if they could, such as for an unconscious patient or a parent who cannot be
contacted.
\Keys to Well-Being - ANS -Maintain personal relationships, exercise, sleep, eating right, limiting
alcohol and caffeine.
\Lateral - ANS -To the side, away from the mid-line
\Layers of the Skin - ANS -
\Level of Evidence 1 - ANS -The highest level set of data that results from RCTs or
meta-analysis of RCTs.
\Level of Evidence 2 - ANS -These studies use concurrent controls without true randomization.
Often retrospective and less reliable.
\Level of Evidence 3 - ANS -Studies with retrospective controls and little actual control of
experiments. They use events that have already occurred. Useful, but prone to bias.
\Level of Evidence 4 - ANS -Studies without a control group (case studies). Only one group is
examined and not compared. Outcomes difficult to evaluate without this comparison in different
patients.
\Level of Evidence 5 - ANS -Studies not directly related to the specific patient/population.
Frequently used for prehospital treatments, but data is prone to interpretation based on different
populations or circumstances.
\Levels of Emergency Service Response - ANS -EMR, EMT, AEMT, Paramedic, Dispatcher
\Levels of EMS Training - ANS -1. Emergency Medical Responder
2. Emeregency Medical Technician
3. Advanced Emergency Medical Tech.
\Mechanical Functions of Breathing - ANS -Inhalation (active) Exhalation (passive)
