News Values and ‘NewsWorthiness’ - The Newspapers want to generate profit, they filter
through a few different values.
- Negativity/Conflict - Bad news is more likely to sell than good news
- Proximity - British readers prefer to read about british victims rather than foreign
cases
- Risk - It makes it more interesting if the viewer believes that the case being reported
makes them under risk
- Spectacle and Graphic Images - Viewers are more likely to read something if it has
graphic images
- Simplification - Viewers prefer crimes that are un-complex and are able to be
understood by the general public
- Sex or Violence - Crimes of sexual or violent nature are more likely to be shown on
the news than something like white collar crime, which is far more complex
- Personalisation - Stories that are more likely to be able to relate to the viewer/
human interest stories
- High Status - Viewers like to listen to what happens to celebrities or those of higher
status

father holding his newborn child with the words “for his sake, for his future… Stop”. Not only
that but it says “boy is born in a bomb shelter beneath Putin’s murderous assault on Kyiv”.
Almost every word is an exaggeration.
The Sun - The cover image of The Sun’s newspaper is “mad vlad goes nuclear”. The cover
sensationalises the situation and dramatises it. It's a very negative comment, there's nothing
positive about it. This is a hyperbolic statement that uses the threat of putin starting a
nuclear war as a way to make the situation more personal towards the reader - a global
nuclear war would affect everyone.
The cover of the sun reporting about Letbey’s murder of seven babies has a title saying
“Final Act of Wickedness' ' and a photo with what looks like a mugshot. This article portrays
her as an evil villain, referring to her with words such as ‘wicked’ a ‘baby killer’
In stark contrast, The Guardian reports about the same story with the nurse smiling with
baby clothes in her hands,while the title reads “Letbey locked up for life over ‘sadistic’
murder of seven babies”. Even though the murderer is described as ‘sadistic’, the murderer
is still pictured smiling, showing that the quality press is less negative.
