Terms in this set (121)
assumptions of behaviourist approach: - Only observable behaviour counts: Internal processes (memory, thinking)
cannot be measured scientifically so are ignored.
- Tabula rasa: We are born a "blank slate" - all behaviour comes from our
environment (upbringing, peers, education), not innate factors.(innate means
not learned)
- Scientific method only: Relies on controlled lab experiments; animal
studies are accepted as applicable to humans. ( Animal research applies to
human behaviour)
- Repetition leads to automaticity: Repeated actions become internalised
and unconscious.
more assumptions of behaviourist approach - Learning happens via conditioning: All behaviour follows stimulus-
response links (classical conditioning eg unconditioned stimulus) or
reward/punishment.
Classical Conditioning (CC) Learning through association

Unconditioned Stimulus Naturally triggers an automatic response eg food
Unconditioned response Natural not learned reaction to UCS eg salivate
Neutral stimulus produces no relevant response on its own eg bell
Conditioned stimulus neutral stimulus now triggers a response after pairing eg bell paired with
food
conditioned response learned response to the CS eg salivation at the bell

more about the stimulus - CR is usually weaker than UCR
- Extinction: If CS is presented alone repeatedly (without UCS), the CR fades
over time
- First demonstrated by Pavlov's dog experiments
