In their 2011 article “Perceived academic effects of instant messaging use”, published in
Computers and Education, Reynol Junco and Shelia R. Cotten explore how information and
communication technologies and the rising use of those technologies can have a negative or
positive effect on college student academic success. By utilizing a large-sample nationwide
survey and opinions from several experts in education and technology, Junco and Cottencotton
(2011) illustrate how technology has a positive impact on communication between college
students and education faculty and how overuse and multitasking with information and
communication technologies has a negative impact on college student academics. Junco and
Shelia suggest that it is important for higher education faculty to understand how their students
use these technologies so that proper interventions can be put in place in the event that they are
having a negative impact on a students academics.
Junco and Cotten (2011) illustrate a large increase in information and communication
technology use among college students. They suggest that an uptick in social media networking
sites and instant messaging programs could be used to engage students in ways that add to their
overall college experience. The authors argue that wWhen there is more open communication
between students and instructors, students are given a better opportunity to succeed by being able
