2. Key Theories in Cognitive Psychology
Information Processing Theory:
Compares the human brain to a computer, suggesting that information is processed in stages (input, storage, and retrieval).
Example: In memory tests, participants remember lists of words by encoding (input), storing them in short-term or long-term memory, and
retrieving them later.
Schema Theory:
Shows how previous experiences shape the way we process new information.
Example: When learning a new language, existing knowledge of one's native language (schema) influences how new vis learned and
understood.
Piaget's Stages of Cognitive Development:
Explains how children’s thinking evolves through distinct stages:
1. Sensorimotor Stage (0-2 yrs): Learning through physical interaction with the environment.
2. Preoperational Stage (2-7 yrs): Development of language and symbolic thinking but still lacking logical reasoning.
