As science continues to jump in leap and bounds, it seems that cancer is still at the
forefront of all fights in the medical community. As the population continues to age, cancers
continue to pop up on all people regardless of age, race or gender. Although in the past, most of
us can remember watching television and seeing the cigarette commercials, going on a flight or
going to a restaurant and having the smoking and non-smoking sections, this is simply not a part
of todays world and society. Although smoking is a major contributor to lung cancers, it is not

the only link to this potentially deadly and debilitating disease. Multitude of journals, articles,
studies and websites are geared to the education, testing, surveillance, prevention and treatments
however the stigma still remains that people are afraid of knowing the truth and ignorance is
bliss. To this date, lung cancer still remains the leading cause of cancer related deaths in the
united states and smoking still largely linked to the main cause (dela cruz et al., 2011). On a state
basis, florida still remains at an average level of diagnosis and treatments which could be related
to stigmas, lack of insurance, screenings and lack of information (ala, 2021). With the population
growing and needs for more providers increases, the nurse practitioner is geared to provide care,
preventative exams and specialty care for those at a higher risk of not only lung cancers but all
cancers now and in the future to come, while increasing the cancer survival rates (cooper et al.,
2010).
Cancer, a word that can instill fear in most. Cancer is a disease that is observed to have
abnormal and uncontrolled divisions of cells in any part of the body. It can be malignant and
rapid identification, diagnosis, and treatments are necessary for optimal outcomes. According to
the cdc, lung cancer is a cancer that begins in the lungs and typically grouped into two
categories; small cell carcinoma and non-small cell carcinoma (2021). Although there are several
