Cell Parts
The Nucleus:
-contains genes/chromosomes
-the nucleolus makes ribosomal RNA (rRNA) to transport to and use in the cytoplasm
Chromosomes:
-all contained in the nucleus
-One unit of DNA which carries genetic information
-all chromosomes are made up of Chromatin (DNA + Special proteins called histones)
-appearance changes as cell divides.
-90% of time: relaxed
-10% of time (turing cell division): supercoiled
Ribosomes:
-made of rRNA
-carry out cells genetic instructions
-Synthesize proteins in 2 locations:
-free: in the cytoplasm
-attached on outside of ER or nuclear envelope
Endomembrane System:
-endoplasmic reticulum (ER): rough
-golgi apparatus: smooth
lysosomes (animals only)
-either continuous or connected via transfer by vesicles
Golgi Apparatus:
-made of flattened sacs called cisternae
-receiving site (cis site) gets vesicles from the ER
-shipping site (trans site) sorts and packages materials into vesicles
