CHARACTERS
1. Ponyboy: He is 14. He has light-brown/red hair and green/grey eyes.
2. Darry: Ponyboy oldest brother. His full name is Darrel. He treats Ponyboy like he is 6 and works
very hard. He looks like their father and act nothing like his father. He is broad-shouldered, tall
and muscular. He has dark-brown hair and cold eyes.
3. Soda(pop): Ponyboy second-oldest brother. He is 16, almost 17. He is reckless and always
grinning. He is never going to grow up. Ponyboy loves him more than anyone. He is handsomer
than anyone else, movie-star handsome. He has dark-gold hair and dark-brown eyes.
4. Steve Randle: He is 17 and Sodas best buddy. He is tall and lean with thick hair. Steve don’t like
Ponyboy. He works together with Soda at a gasoline station. That became very popular because
Steve is very good with cars and Soda attracted girls.
5. Two-bit Mathews: His real name is Keith. He is the oldest of the gang. He is tall and has rusty-
coloured sideburns and grey eyes. He always makes jokes.
6. Dally: His real name is Dallas Winston. He is the real character of the gang. He has an elfish face,
high cheekbones, sharp teeth, a pointed chin, eyes like a lynx, blue eyes and white-blond hair. He
is tougher, colder and meaner than the others. He has quite a reputation at the police station.
7. Johnny Cade: He is the youngest of the gang (16) (After Ponyboy) He is small and has black eyes in
a dark tanned face and jet-black hair.
8. Cherry: Her full name is Sherry …... But she is called Cherry, because her hair. She is a cheerleader
at Ponyboy’s school
9. Marcia: Cherry her friend. Also a cheerleader at Ponyboy’s school.
10. Randy and Bob: Boyfriends of Marcia and Cherry
11. Buck Merril: Dally’s rodeo partner
12. Tim Shepard
13. Curly Shepard: Tim’s little brother
, CHAPTER 1
Ponyboy is walking back home alone from a movie starring Paul Newman. It isn’t smart to walk alone as a
greaser, the poor kids because they can get jumped by the Socs, the west-side rich kids. Darry forbid ponyboy
to get in trouble with the police, because their parents died in an auto-wreck and they can only stay together if
they behave. He got scared after he saw that a red Corvair was trailing him, because Johnny got hold by 4 socs
and after that he was afraid of his own shadow. 4 socs got out of the car. One said with a over friendly voice
that they were going to cut all my long hair. Another one took his knife. They had him down, slugged him and
held a knife against his throat. He was biting the socs. Than Darry and Soda showed up and saved him. They are
in a gang with four others who are like brothers. Steve Randle, Two-bit Mathews, Dally and Johnny Cade. In
New-York are a few named gangs around, but there’s no gang rivalry. Except for the socs, you can’t win against
them, because they’ve got all the breaks. Dally has a reputation. Ponyboy didn’t like him, but he is smart and
you must respect him. Ponyboy can’t please Darry, but Soda always takes up for Ponyboy. Dally invited Johnny
and Ponyboy for an action movie tomorrow. Darry was a popular captain of the football team, but they didn’t
have the money to send him to college, even with the scholarship. Now he has many jobs. Soda tells Ponyboy
that he wants to marry Sandy after he got a better job and is going to help Darry with the bills.
CHAPTER 2
Dally, Ponyboy and Johnny had some time left before the movie started. They went to the drugstore and Dally
stole 2 packages of Kools. They went to the Greasers drive-in ‘the Dingo’. The other Greaser drive-in is ‘Jay’s’.
The socs go to ‘The way out’ and ‘Rusty’s’. The Dingo is a rough hangout, there’s always a fight and once a girl
got shot. When they arrived there was a fight, but they left as soon as the blades came out. They sneaked in to
the biggest drive-in of the down ‘Nightly double’, just because Dally liked to break the laws. There were only 2
girls at the drive-in: Cherry and Marcia. Dally was talking dirty to the girls. Cherry defended herself and threw
her coke in Dally’s face, but Marcia just drank her coke. When Johnny came back. He told dally to leave the girls
alone. Dally did because he was so shocked that Johnny was saying something. Then Ponyboy and Johnny sat
with the girls to protect them. After a while they heard a voice of a soc, but it was Two-bit who was imitating a
soc. He told them that Dally was in a fight. Cherry and Ponyboy went away to get some popcorn. She asked
ponyboy if Johnny was hurt bad. Ponyboy told her Johnny’s story:
It was 4 months ago. Me, Soda and Steve were at the DX station. Johnny jacket was on the ground and Steve
also saw stains. We found Johnny lying on the ground. His face was cut up, bruised and swollen. The whole
gang showed up. Johnny gasped out his story. 4 socs jumped out of a blue mustang. They hurt him bad and
threatened him with everything they could think of. Since that day he carries a blade for if he gets jumped
again. We would kill them, so nobody could ever hurt him like that again.
Cherry told Ponyboy that not all the socs are like that and they have troubles too. When they came back to the
movie, Two-bit and Marcia hit off. Ponyboy, Cherry and Johnny just sat there. Johnny never spoke to girls
because Steve told him not to. Ponyboy thought that if he had the troubles of a soc, he would consider himself
lucky.
