Audition 1
Vision reminders
Tuning curve: the visual cortex is organized in lines instead of donuts

Sound
Sound wave: the pattern of air pressure changes

Compression: higher levels of local air pressure

Rarefaction: lower levels of air pressure

Is a Longitudal (parallel to wave direction) waves

Wavelength: Distance between peaks

Physical aspects
Amplitude: how large the peaks are

Loudness

Frequency: how close together the waves are (how frequency each wave is)

gives us pitch

Complexity: How smooth the wave is

Timbre

Measuring AMpllitude
Uses decibels

Scale is logarithmic (so we can plot giant and small numbers on same graph)

0-60 is comfortable, 60-80 is annoying, 80-120 extremely loud, 120-140
painful, 140-170 intolerable, 170-194 deadly

Measuring Frequency (pitch)
uses Hertz (Hz) or cycles per sound

Audition 1 1

, how many waves are in 1 second or cycle

and hand on a clock ticks at 1hz

Measuring Complexity (Timbre)
simple wave vs complex wave

Types of sound
Ultraviolet: above 20,000hz, frequency too high

Infrared: slower wave lengths we can’t hear, below 20-30 hz

Ultrasound: sound we cannot hear that is very high frequency

Anatomy of the ear
Outer: Part we can see

Pinna

the auditory canal

all the way up to the ear drim

Middle: Bone structures

amplify and transmit compression of air

Inner ear:

cochlea & Semicircular canals

Outer Ear
Pinna: Part that is outside of the head
