To decrease health care costs and increase positive healthcare outcomes, healthcare
organizations have moved towards implementing interactive patient engagement technology
as studies have shown patients that frequently engage in their care meet these goals more
often thanthose who do not (Srinivasan et Al., 2020). The idea behind this is that
encouraging patients to become more involved in their own care, having direct access to

tailored education for their disease and continued support through technologies during and
post hospitalization will result indecreased length of stay, complications, readmissions, and
improved long-term outcomes.
The inpatient adult’s demographics and health concerns can vary widely depending
on location but include males and females age 18+, with common comorbidities including
organ failure such has heart, liver and kidney dysfunctions, trauma patients and neuro
disorders such asstrokes taking a majority of the population. Many of the disease processes
seen in the hospital can be related to smoking, alcohol use, drug use and obesity no matter
what demographic region you work in due to our societal preferences.
Search Methods
As there is still quite a lot of room for research around interactive patient
technology dueto the relatively new nature, search methods for this literature review had
to be more generalizedthan specific to my proposed intervention. Instead of researching
electronic whiteboards that interact with EMR systems, which I was only able to find a
couple articles that utilized similar technology, I had to broaden the topic to all types of
patient interactive technologies including outpatient demographics as well as inpatient.
This literature review used google scholar, CINAHL and Grand Canyon University’s peer
