proces modeling
→ Creating a realistic and understandable description of the way business works
→ Process diagram shows what is done, in whet sequence and by whom

Business model standards

BPMN is de standaard voor proces modelering →strong graphical & technical
PETRINET vond hij belangrijk
BPMN turned out to be the best thing, free !

Why Business modeling?
Every organisations
Way organisations are structured and how they organize their service and built and sell their
products
= Organization Service Delivery (how do organizations create value for their customers)
Complexity of a Service Delivery Infrastructure
Service Proposition → Service Implementation
Service cannot be split of the customer
→ Real work is executed at the hart of the company in the processes by units or applications
→ No service without consumption (! When something finally goes wrong, you know what the
service is (VB. Insurance)
→ Service design: number of steps in the costumer journey

Marketing
We offer a lot > but underdeliver (= SERVICE GAP)
BPM-CYCLE
By modeling, , analyzing, designing and improving these processes organizations try to built a
customer experience that fulfills the expectations
 OPERATIONAL EXCELENCE

,BPM-lifecycle: improve their operations in a structured way
 Goal: better processes, for better service delivery

Important for the implementation:
o Process to organisation: Training, work instructions, coaching
o Process to applications: how to ultimate these business processes (= process automation)

Process Automation
No longer one side solution, different solutions for different types of processes.

Technology stack is still evolving, but is also already a mature stack, but organizations still have to
learn that custom development and outsourcing is not the only solution. Alternatives that can be
applied in an efficient and enterprise ready way, for instance BPMS: process engine & low code
environment can be used to automate and integrate multiple applications in a swift and flexible way.

Since a few years: robotic process automation
= train your digital workforce to execute the processes just like humans do by using the
underline application.
 You need a good understanding of your processes to succeed process automation in each of
these scenario’s

Warning
BPMN is a visual language → purpose: communicate sequence constraints to different
stakeholders
BPMN biggest advantage is also its biggest constraint: simple visual appearance
Overview
BPMN = 3 visual languages
➔ Own vocabulary, rules, own uses.
1) Orchestration → main language

, View point of the process, cordinates work and communicate with external partners to
achieve the results of the process.

Vb. Private process that communicates with processes of participants (customer)
3 types of orchestration diagrams:
• PRIVATE NON-EXECUTABLE BUSINESS PROCESSES
→cannot be used automatically for automation
• PRIVATE EXECUTABLE BUSINESS PROCESSES
→Use diagram in business process engine
• PUBLIC PROCESSES
→communication between a process and another process or participant

2) Choreography

➔differs from other diagrams because: focusses on the way participants interact and
coordinate.
! complexity of the visualization of an task: what needs to be done, who sends the message
and to who
 Not used very often

3) Conversation

, High lever representation of the communication between the different processes
 Exchanging messages to achieve a certain result
 High level overview, but too simplistich (complex set of messages will be hard to model)

, layer 1: flow objects
BPMN language can be deconstructed and put in a layer model
 Further away from the core, the further we go from the core of BPM

3 main blocks of any process diagram: FLOW OBJECTS (it’s all about these objects)
1) Activities: work that must be executed during the process
→ two types: tasks & subprocesses: task most important
Task = an atomic unit of work, only element that is able to show WORK that must be done.
2) Events = represent something that happens during the process → here is the complexity
→ 3 types:
o Start events (circle thin line) : how a process is started
o End events(circle bold line): end of a process or a process path
o Intermediate events (double line circle) : between start and end event
3) Gateways = split and merge paths (now the only way, later there comes more)
→tokens and token semantics

➔complexity is in the different type of FLOW objects that exists
