HENRY VII: CONSOLIDATION
1377 ❖ Edward III died - outlived son/heir Edward of Woodstock = Woodstock’s son Richard II becomes king
1399 ❖ Richard II deposed by his cousin H4
1413 ❖ Henry IV (1st Lancastrian king) died at the age of 45 so Henry V is king
1422 ❖ Henry V died of dysentery leaving 10 month old son as King = Henry VI
1457 ❖ Henry VII born + mom distant relative to Lancastrians - others had better claim to the throne
1461 ❖ Henry VI deposed by Edward IV
❖ Henry VII and Henry V looked after + closely watched
1470 ❖ Henry VI becomes king again after rebellion
❖ Henry VII freed but still insignificant as king had a son
1471 ❖ Edward IV won throne back + killed Henry VI and his son
❖ So many died that Henry VII = most important Lancastrian
❖ Henry VII escaped to Brittany
1475 ❖ Giles Daubney - Chamberlain of the Household after Sir William Stanley’s execution
1483 ❖ Edward IV dies suddenly leaving 2 sons, 5 daughters + eldest Edward V inherits the throne.
❖ But Richard II declares Princes in the Tower as illegitimate and named himself rightful heir = E5 deposed by R3
❖ Henry VII pledges to marry Elizabeth of York if he becomes King
1484 ❖ Henry VII no longer supported by Duke of Brittany = King of France provided troops, money (keep Eng unstable)
❖ Henry VII escaped last minute dressed as servant + rode across border to France
❖ Henry VII landed in Wales with an army + hoped Thomas, Lord Stanley might join in his side
❖ (April) Richard III’s son Edward died = no heirs
1485 ❖ (March) Richard III’s wife died = dynastic threat
❖ (21 Aug) Richard III defeated at Battle of Bosworth by 1st Tudor King, Henry VII [led 400-500 loyal exiles] =
deaths of ½ lords of 60 nobles families
❖ (30 Oct) Coronation
❖ (7 Nov) 1st Parliament
❖ Imprisoned Richard’s nephews: Earl of Warwick, John de la Pole, Earl Lincoln + Earl of Northumberland
released from prison (didn’t fight with Richard III)
❖ Giles Daubney (former Edward IV household) - Lord Daubney + Lieutenant of Calais
❖ Richard Bray - (serviced Margaret Beaufort) Chancellor of Duchy
1486 ❖ (March) Royal Progress round England = show royal power - heard petitions + cases, showing future legacy
❖ (April) Stafford/Lovell Rebellion: Henry VII went on tour to the north of England, Lovell + Stafford left the
sanctuary of the abbey to raise a rebellion.
❖ (Sep) Prince Arthur born - established Tudor dynasty + Yorkist support
1489 ❖ Dukes of York (Edward IV + Richard III), Richard Earl of Warwick + Richard, Earl of Gloucester died
❖ (Nov) Henry VII’s daughter Margaret born
1491 ❖ (June) Henry VII’s son Henry VIII was born
1496 ❖ (March) Henry VII’s daughter Mary was born
1499 ❖ (Feb) Henry VII’s son Edmund
❖ (July) prestigious marriage plans with the Spanish royal family were finalised
1500 ❖ Prince Edmund died
