Chapter 5: Muscles & Tendons
Bundles of muscle cells are often called fibers because of
their length
Connective tissue sheets hold the muscle fibers together and
connect the muscles to the bones
Skeletal Muscles
Respiration:
o Skeletal muscles move the chest wall and diaphragm as
you breath
Communication:
o Enable you to speak, type, write, etc.
Movement:
o When the muscle contracts, your bones move too
Posture:
o Keeps you upright when sitting, standing, or moving
Body heat:
o When the muscles contract they produce the needed
heat to regulate body temperature
, Fascia: thick layer of connective tissue
Skeletal muscle can also be called striated muscle, due to
the striations
Exercise and weightlifting will enlarge your muscles, this is
called hypertrophy
Neglecting your muscles will cause them to shrink, this is
called atrophy
“-trophy”: [suffix] nourishment
Muscles and Tendons of the Upper & Lower Extremities:
Your pectoral (shoulder) girdle connects your axial skeleton
to your upper limbs to help them move
The large tendon of the pectoral girdle is the rotator cuff,
which is inserted into the humerus
Anterior muscles of pectoral girdle
Deltoid (shoulder muscle)
Pectoralis major (chest muscle)
