Four Major Types of Bones (Shapes) - ✔️✔️Long bones
Short bones
Flat bones
Irregular bones
Long bones (3 parts) - ✔️✔️Diaphysis
Metaphysis
Epihysis
Diaphysis (Part of long bone) - ✔️✔️- Shaft
- Provides strength and resist bending forces
- Region of primary ossification
Metaphysis (part of long bone) - ✔️✔️✔️ Flared portion
✔ Between diaphysis and epiphysis
✔ Growth zone
Epiphysis (part of long bone) - ✔️✔️✔️ Ends of the bones
✔ Assist in bone development
✔ Distal and proximal ends of bones
✔ Epiphyseal plate (growth plate)- between metaphysis and epiphysis
Functions of Bones - ✔️✔️· The body's framework of the body
· It protects internal organs
· Provide a rigid support and help maintain posture.
· Connected by joints held together by ligament
· Contains and protects the RBM
• Storage site of the body for minerals
• Produce blood
BONE MARROW - ✔️✔️⮚ Found in the medullary cavity of the long bones located at
the center of diaphysis
⮚ Has two types
⮚ RBM- produce and replaces red blood cells for growth and development
⮚ Yellow marrow- composed of adipose tissue which serves as an area of fat storage
Extracellular Matrix - ✔️✔️• Bone, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments of the skeletal
system are all connective tissues.
