Placenta Previa - ANS: - Low lying placenta - growing close to cervical os (opening) or completely over
the os
- if it's growing over, mom needs a c section
- Bright red bleeding but painless!!
Hegar's sign - ANS: softening/compressibility of lower uterus
Chadwick's sign - ANS: deep violet color of cervix/vaginal mucosa (chaddy's deep purple shirt)
Goodell's sign - ANS: softening of cervix
Abruption - ANS: - premature separation of placenta from uterus wall while pregnant
- Painful dark red bleeding
- causes: pregnancy induced HTN
Trauma (jolt)
Drug use (cocaine)
smoking/nicotine use
Rubella (german measles) - ANS: - cannot give drug during pregnancy if mom is not immune
- Avoid pregnancy 28 days after immunization
- Need to give postpartum
- Can cause birth defects
IUD - ANS: - Stays in long but can get uterine perforation
- Need to monitor monthly to make sure the string is still there
, - Contraception can be reversed with immediate return to fertility
- Does not protect from STIs
diaphragm - ANS: fits over cervix, replace every 2 years, insert 6 hrs before sex, 6 hrs after
Hormonal contraceptives - ANS: - do not protect against STIs
- need to be consistent
- if miss dose, take one asap
- side effects: breast tenderness, nausea, headache, weight and mood changes
Lordosis - ANS: Lower back pain due to inward arch because your spine is adjusting to realign your
center of gravity
Herpes - ANS: - Genital herpes: cannot have a vaginal delivery if there is a current outbreak (vulvar pain
or itching)
- Painful blisters and tender lymph nodes - need cultures for moms who are near/at term
Chlamydia - ANS: Lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) which can cause infertility or ectopic
pregnancy

Hydatidiform Mole pregnancy - ANS: - Rare complication of pregnancy characterized by the abnormal
growth of trophoblasts, the cells that normally develop into the placenta
