Biomechanics and Movement- Tutorial

Which data-gathering activity would be useful for a biomechanical analysis? - Answer-measuring the
strength of a person's leg muscles

Which action is an application of biomechanics? - Answer-measuring a person's running dynamics and
making changes to improve performance

Which two concepts explain how the body produces movement? - Answer-force and leverage

When a person kneels to pick up a shell on the beach, what type of movement is exhibited at the knee
joints? - Answer-flexion

What kind of movement is the arm engaged in when going from position A to position B? - Answer-
extension

Which injury stimulates muscle growth? - Answer-microtrauma

, In terms of biomechanics, which circumstance leads to higher levels of stress on a person's body? -
Answer-an increase in a person's activity level

Nadine has experienced a series of small injuries over the course of her competitive swimming season.
Now she is in constant pain when she trains. What best describes her injury? - Answer-overuse

Which option did you choose and why? - Answer-I decided to pick the jump shot training option
because I enjoy basketball more than running. I've played basketball most of my life. I'm not on a team
or anything; I just shoot around in the driveway and sometimes play pickup at school or at the park.

Did the experiment change the way you run or take a jump shot? Explain. - Answer-Yes, I think my form
has changed for the better. I was paying closer attention to placing my feet, bending my knees, and
timing the release of the ball from my hands. Even though I missed a couple of the first shots, my
accuracy eventually improved. The best advice was letting the ball go just before reaching the highest
point in my jump

How did your legs feel after running? How did your knees and shoulders feel after taking jump shots? -
Answer-A day after finishing the jump shots, my knees felt tender. I was shooting on concrete, so I
imagine that the impact of the concrete had something to do with it. I was wearing running shoes for
the activity, but next time I'll likely switch over to real basketball shoes. If I bend my knees more on
impact, I can stop the wear and tear on my knees.

What intensity level did you reach to complete the activity? How do you know? Were you able to
maintain that intensity level throughout the activity? - Answer-For me, shooting jump shots is a
moderate-intensity activity. Even the warm-up and the strength-training exercises reached only
moderate intensity. I was able to keep a good pace as I shot around. I know that it was moderate
because I was sweating, but I wasn't really strained too much.

Which mechanics are the most difficult to maintain for the sport that you chose? What are the
consequences of not following them? Explain. - Answer-When shooting a jump shot, the hardest thing
to do over and over was driving with my legs. I become so focused on the ball, my hand position, and
the rim that I forget about my legs. The consequence is that your shot can come up short and you might
not get enough arc on the ball. Without my legs, my shot flattens out with less chance of going through
the rim.
