Impressionism - Answer-A style of music in which the composer was trying to convey an
impression of something. This was not program music, per se , because it did not
attempt to tell a story. Dream like in quality. Note clusters, unusual scales (whole tone
scales (no half-steps)), and static harmony (no dominant and tonic tension)
Tonality - Answer-when a particular piece of music has a tonal center, or is written in a
specific key
Atonality - Answer-Lack of a tonal center
Bitonality - Answer-Two tonal centers (or keys) used at a time. Sounds dissonant
Polytonality - Answer-Two or more tonal centers present at a time
Polyrhythm - Answer-Two rhythms occurring at the same time (triplets and duplets at
the same time).
Polymeter - Answer-When multiple meters are occurring at the same time in different
lines.
Irregular Meters - Answer-Meters not divisible by 2 or 3 (Ex. 11/16 meter)
Mixed meter - Answer-A piece in which the meter changes frequently throughout the
piece.
