Criteria of Involuntary Admission - Answers- * Individual is suffering from a mental
disorder that severely impairs one's ability to react appropriately to their environment, or
to associate with others.
* Requires psychiatric treatment in/through a designated facility.
* Requires care, supervision, and control to prevent substantial mental and/or physical
deterioration, or prevent the individual from harming themself or others.
* Is not suitable as a voluntary patient.
Steps of Involuntary Admission where pt meets criteria for involuntary admission. -
Answers- 1) a)Pt either seen by physician (Section 22),
b)or brought in by police (Section 28), then seen by physician.
2) 1st form 4 is filled, certifying pt for 48 hours.
3) 2nd Form 4 is completed by a second physician, certifying pt for 1 month.
1st Form 4 - Answers- Detains individual for 48 hours.
Done by a physician.
2nd Form 4 - Answers- Detains individual for a month.
To be completed by a second physician.
Form 4.2: Second Medical Certificate (Involuntary Admission) is valid for one month less
a day from the involuntary admission date (expires at midnight the day prior).
This means if certified on June 25th, certificate expires on July 24th at Midnight. Start
date the day of Form 4.1.

Must be completed for involuntary admission.
Reasons that warrant Section 28 - Answers- For police to apprehend a person under
section 28, the person must be:
(a) acting in a manner likely to endanger that person's own safety or the safety of
others, and
(b) apparently a person with a mental disorder.
Upon arrival, police must keep the person in their custody until the individual is
examined by a physician.
Physicians are not obligated to certify a patient just because they are brought in under
Section 28. The physician must assess the patient, and the patient should be certified if
they meet all four criteria.
1st Form 6 - Answers- Renewal Certificate: Authorizes involuntary admission for ONE
months.
2nd Form 6 - Answers- Renewal Certificate: Authorizes involuntary admission for
THREE months.
3rd Form 6 - Answers- Renewal Certificate: Authorizes involuntary admission for SIX
months.

2) Judge completes Form 10: Warrant (Apprehension of Person with Apparent Mental
Disorder).
3) Police have authority to apprehend individual individual under section 28 of the
mental health act.

Can be completed by friends or family to have someone admitted.

Completed by Judge to apprehend pt, under section 28.
