Preceptor Responsibilities - ✔️✔️* Provide a safe learning environment
* Direct supervision of all invasive procedures
* REPORT any deficiencies in the student's progress
* Provide daily written evaluations of the student in accordance with the Alabama Fire
College policies and standards
How to conduct the rotation. - ✔️✔️* Students are assigned to preceptor for a shift
*** Student should be on time, neatly dressed and well groomed
*** Student must review with the preceptor his/her objectives at the earliest convenience
Clinical and Field Orientation - ✔️✔️Importance of Clinical rotations.
> Students retention is increased as the number of senses used is increased
Student Retention - ✔️✔️**10% of what is read
**20% of what is heard
**30% of what is seen
**50% of what is seen and heard
Student Retention (cont) - ✔️✔️**70% of what is said
**90% of what is said and done
Field Rotations - ✔️✔️* Provide hands on experience
*Opportunity to practice with a skilled person that is present
* Able to relate in classroom and lab to real life experience

his or her daily responsibilities while fulfilling required objectives
* Should be a positibe experience for the preceptor and student
The Preceptor - ✔️✔️* Key to effective and efficient student growth
* Key to student skill assessment
* Key to student progression to team leader
* Key to student confidence
The Preceptor (B) - ✔️✔️* Role model-fulfilled by communication, trust, feedback,
support the learning process
* Resource- provide knowledge, from a wealth of experience, otherwise not available to
student
, The Preceptor (C) - ✔️✔️* Supervisor that will oversee treatment, evaluate skill, and
knowledge level
* also Coach and cheer success, encourage improvement, provide guidance for patient
care.
The Preceptor Should---- - ✔️✔️* Have great expectations of the student's future
* Look for opportunity to enhance learning
* Become familiar with the students goals and abilities
* Inform student of their expectations
* Enrich the student's education with their diverse viewpoint
Preceptor Rights - ✔️✔️The preceptor has the right to
** Be treated with respect and dignity
** Be free from intimidation or harssment of any kind
** Expect the student to be eager to learn
** Contact the EMS Clinical Coordinator for clarification and/or management of any
given situation
Expectation of Preceptor (B) - ✔️✔️* To familiarize student with the area of the
department where the student will be performing rotation
* To assign tasks for the student to accomplish that will assist in performing routine
responsibilities
*** Example: Restocking, recording vital signs etc.
Expectation of Preceptor (C) - ✔️✔️* Allow the student to perform, under supervision,
procedures that will fulfillf his/her objectives
*** Patient Assessment
*** IV Therepy (AEMT/Paramedics)
*** Drug Administration (AEMT/Paramedics)
*** Intubations (Paramedics)
*** Alternative Airways (AEMT/Paramedics)
*** Students will have a list
Expectation of Preceptor (D) - ✔️✔️* Allow the students to have Team Lead for ALS
calls in order to become a successful team leader- prepare the student to be a confident
leader who can adapt to various circumstances
*** An ALS call includes any procedure above the Scope of Practice of an EMT
Expectation of Preceptor (E) - ✔️✔️* To sign objective verification forms
***Only sign off on objectives which the preceptor is confident that has been fulfilled by
the student
* Check the student documentation for accuracy and assist with any weakness that the
preceptor feels are present
