OSTEOPOROSIS:
 Bones become fragile and more likely to break
 Density quality of the bones are reduced
 The risk of fractured is increased
 Lead to disability or even death
 The bones contain collagen fibers (protein and vitamin c is
necessary)
 The body constantly breaks down and reabsorbs old bone tissue and
then builds new bone tissue to replace it
Causes of osteoporosis:
 Bones stop growing between ages 16-18 and peak mass ( 25-30)
BONE MASS IS ACHIEVED BY:
 Genetic factors
 Nutrition
 Physical activity
- In youth it is important to optimize peak bone mass
- Bone tissue loss increases after menopause ( oestrogen production
stops and bones no longer benefit from its protective effect)
- Low fat tissue –results in poor oestrogen production

Risk factors include
 Low calcium intake – essential for strong bone
 Dietary factors - too little vitamin D calcium and phosphorus
 Inadequate physical activity
 Certain drugs long- term e.g. corticosteroids - medicines may
interfere with calcium absorption
 Family history of the disease
 Females are far more susceptible – due to the hormone menopause
and collagen which help with formation of bones
