FOOD LABELING:
Food labels can be:
 Misleading towards the consumer
 Can provide invalid printed labels
Note that:
 All vegetables oil are naturally free of cholesterol
 All vegetables oils have the same energy value (kJ or Cal) and there
is no such thing as a lite vegetable oil.
Labels need to state the following:
1. Only fact
2. Not confusing the consumer with and words or sentences
3. Using the label to educate the consumer
Purpose of food labeling:
 to protect the consumer
 Communicate information about the product
 Help the consumer make healthy wise food choices


PROTECTION ACT:
March 2010 regulation 146 help protect consumers with regards to any
false food labeling or advertising of pre-packaged foods.
RULES AND REGULATIONS OF LABELING IN SOUTH AFIRCA
1. Information must be clearly visible and easy to read
2. The label must be attached to the container and not
separate
3. Name of the food product must be in size 4mm
4. Nutritional claims of the product must be compliant to
regulations
5. Pictures on labels must not be misleading or deceptive


South Africa mandatory food label information:
 An accurate name of the product
 The country or origin if necessary
 Batch identification number to ensure that the product is traceable
during production
 Date stamps (day/month/year)
 Name and address in South Africa
