Chapter 1 – Introduction to Communication Science

Communication science is about theories models and concepts.
Why do many people place the beginning of mass communication at the beginning of the
20th centure?

Many other stromingen started at that point, industrialization started in 19 th century but
everything is changed in 20th century. Machines were invented and developed quickly. Paper
making was much cheaper and easier  papers pamflets were cheaper and could reach
more people. The world was ripe for all those new political parties.
During the 19th century many people learned to read and write, before that only elite people
can do that.

First world war shocked the world  extensive use of propaganda  mass communication
to fight for their country.

New media like the cinema.

19th century:
- Industrialization
- Rise of nationalism
- Birth of political parties
- Birth of socialism
- Emancipation of the masses  women got more power, before the world consisted
only of men
- Rise of the media  before it was focused on oral media. Also printed media but
only meant for a special group of people.

World war 1:
- Newspapers/magazines/radio  attention  WW1
- Campaigning were aggressive and contained patriotic messages (not only the
content)  propaganda
- Media campaigning for war and patriotism & a motivated patriotic population, set for
war.
- Mass communication was extra interesting during the first world war  many people
start studying it.
- Communication was believed as indoctrination (“magic keys”). Je hoort wat via de
media en dan is jouw favoriete kleur ook opeens wit.  marketing en reclame komt
op
