Chapter 2: The rise of Mass Media

Old media:
 Books
 Newspapers
 Pamphlets
 Print media
 Radio
 Video
 CD
 Cassettes
 Cave Drawings

New media timeline:
 Speeches, songs, poems
 Theatre, storytelling shadow puppets
 Cave drawings, statues, graffiti, paintings
 Coins, clothes, architecture
 Pamphlets, books, newspapers
 Radio, telegraph, telephone
 Cinema, television
 Internet
 Mobile phones
Alle dingen in deze tijdlijn waren op een moment “nieuw”. Onderzoek wordt vaak gedaan
over het verleden ipv het heden of de toekomst.

When new media comes, criticism rises (they all have a core of truth in them):
The audience is overwhelmed with an enormous amount of information. Without the proper
explanation and guidance, the only goal seems providing people with a simple answer to
every question. Never provoking thought. The result is that it becomes easy to appear wise
and skilful while in fact ignorance and stupidity increase (Plato)
- Education will suffer because it makes finding information simpler rather than
promoting thought.
- Information security will be compromised
- Authorship will be difficult to authenticate
- It will be nothing more than a shallow distraction devoid of serious purpose
- People will stop interacting with real people (returning fear)

What causes these new media to appear? What developments made changes in the media
landscape possible? :

- Technological developments (er moet iets veranderen voordat de uitvinding gedaan
kan worden)
- Social developments (people learned how to read, a growing need to information)
o Bijv. Papier werd goedkoper, maar ook groter publiek
