an amendment to the United States Constitution that was adopted in 1868. It granted
citizenship and equal civil and legal rights to African Americans and enslaved people who
had been emancipated after the American Civil War.
-No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of
citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or
property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal
protection of the laws.



Fifteenth Amendment - -1870 constitutional amendment that guaranteed voting
rights regardless of race or previous condition of servitude
-The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the
United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.



Nineteenth Amendment - -The constitutional amendment adopted in 1920 that
guarantees women the right to vote.
-The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granted American women the right to vote, a
right known as women's suffrage, and was ratified on August 18, 1920, ending almost a
century of protest.
