Pilot in Command Certification and
Operational Requirements

✔✔Recreational•

Hobbyists; personal use•

Model airplane flyers•

Public Aircraft Operations (PAO)•

Usually government/military operations•

Universities fall into this category•

Civil•Commercial & Industry operations•Anybody who wants to fly UAS for profit

Recreational Operations and Operators - correct answer ✔✔FAA regulates hobbyist flight according to
rules developed by Academy of Model Aeronautics in the 1950s; official Advisory Circular 91-57, 9 June
1981

Clarification in 2012 FAA Re-Authorization Act & Section 336 Special Rule for Model Aircraft. No rules for
Rec Use. LTD-USE. See Below

The sUAS Hobbyists & Model Airplane Pilot

Must Operate sUAS in accordance with a community-based set of safety guidelines and within the
programming of a nationwide community-based organization (so AC 91-57)

Must strictly fly sUAS as a hobby or for recreational use

Must Not operate sUAS in and over populated areas

, Must Make sure sUAS has been tested

Only operate sUAS if it is limited to not more than 55 pounds unless otherwise certified through a
design, construction, inspection, flight test, and operational safety program administered by a
community-based organization;

Not fly sUAS higher than 400 ft.

Not operate aircraft within 5 miles of an airport without permission. This includes heliports (emergency
medical and hospitals) and private airports. Prior to being operated within 5 miles of an airport, the
operator of the sUAS must contact the airport operator and the airport air traffic control tower with
prior notice for authorized approval for operation.

Always give right-of-way to manned aircraft, in a manner that does not interfere with and gives way to
any manned aircraft;

Hobby UAS must still be registered with FAA, but it is a simple process ( Updates TBA)

Note: Hobby and recreational use is not regulated under 14 CFR part 107. Hobbyists conducting
recreational operations should follow the procedures in AC 91-57, Model Aircraft Operating Standards
(as amended).

Civil Operations & Operators - correct answer ✔✔"Civil" = Commercial Use; i.e., people who charge a fee
and/or fly for profit or earn income for said use.

Prior to 2012, civil/commercial sUAS operators were required to obtain a special airworthiness certificate
in the experimental category AND a COA - and still couldn't fly for profit.

2012 - Section 333 Exemptions•2016 - Part 107 rules.

This is why you are attending this course. RPIC performing due diligence concerning all FAA regulations,
rules and safety matters concerning sUAS and Part 107 sUAS Exam Prep
