NURS319 Impaired Gas Exchange & Respiratory Failure Exam
•Hypoxia
•Reduced tissue oxygenation
•Hypoxemia
•Decreased arterial blood oxygenation levels below 80 ) and PaO2
causes if hypoxia and hypoxemia
•Hypoventilation
•Impaired diffusion
Leading to ventilation-perfusion mismatching
Causes of Hypoventilation
•Airway obstruction
•Chest Trauma
•Neuromuscular diseases
•Pulmonary Edema
•Drug overdoses (severe hypoventilation)
Impaired Diffusion
•The capillary membrane is too thick and oxygen cannot diffuse across membrane
•Cannot diffuse
causes of imapired diffusion
•COPD, ARDS, PNA, Pulmonary Edema, Infection
Ventilation-Perfusion mismatching
•Low blood volume and impaired diffusion
•Problem with either ventilation (breathing) or perfusion (blood flow)
•Diagnosed with vq scan (ventilation quotient)
•Measures air flow and blood flow ratio
