cleared to pass meds. In nursing this is a huge part of our day to day careers, so it was really
exciting to be able to start. I was able to administer creams, crush pills, give mouth rinse, and
finally give my first IM shot. Giving the IM shot was the most exciting part of clinical so far. It
was tremendously nerve wracking giving my first shot. It was an experience I will never forget.
When administering a shot there is a lot of preparation that goes into the process. It was very
helpful to walk through the entire process with the nurse we were assigned to shadow. The
gentleman I was assigned to give my shot to was the perfect patient. He was not someone who
would cry and make a big deal out of getting the shots in general. Once I gave it to him he said “I
didn’t even feel that!” These few words gave me great reassurance for when I give shots in the
future. One thing for me personally that is important to remember is shots are not a big deal. I
am not going to injure the patient. Another interesting thing I did was finally give my first bed
bath. This was something I kept on missing out on doing. I was very eager and nervous. Once I
began all the nerves went away completely. I think I was just nervous due to the fact it was my
very first one. Right now I am having a lot of firsts. First bed bath, first shot, and so on it is a
really exciting time for me and my fellow students. I am eager to gain more and more
experiences. The more experiences I gain the more I will feel comfortable performing the easier
tasks, like bed baths, and then feel comfortable performing the harder tasks as well. Learning
new skills each week is something I look forward to. Being able to apply them right after
learning them makes it that much more exciting.
