De epiglottis is dun, breed, kraakbeen, bedekt met slijmvlies
De epiglottis controleert de toegang tot de ruimte tussen de stemplooien
Tijdens spreken/zingen is de epiglottis naar boven gericht
De epiglottis speelt ook een rol in resonans vorming (in spraak en zang)
Aryepiglottische sfincter wordt ook wel de toeter genoemd
