Primary Prevention
Health promotion and education!
- Example: Going into the classroom to teach hand hygiene.
The school nurse focuses on:
- Preventing childhood injuries.
- Preventing substance abuse behavior.
- Reducing risk for development of chronic disease.
- Monitoring immunization status of children.
Secondary Prevention
Screening and assessment (hearing, vision, lice, etc.).
Determining course of action while using the nursing process.
Caring for ill.
Identification of abuse and neglect.
Tertiary Prevention
Pregnant teens, DNR orders, care for chronic conditions or special needs.
The nurse must:
- Have information about child's medications that need to be given during
school hours.
- Knowledge about any type of procedure like tracheostomy suctioning.
- Knowledge about needed therapy for the child like physical therapy or
occupational.
, - Know if the child has a vision or hearing problem.
- Must ask the teacher to seat the child in the best place in the classroom so
the child can see/hear.
- Be aware if the child has any allergies and develop a plan of care.
- Be aware if a child has asthma and develop plan of care to avoid triggers
(dust, dander, mold etc.).
Asthma Specific Tertiary Prevention
Administering/helping with use of inhalers or other meds.
Teaching faculty and families about asthma and ways to reduce allergens at
home/in classroom.
Advocating to make any unsafe parts of the school safer (safer cleaning
solutions, etc).
Other Tertiary Prevention Responsibilities
Caring and developing a care plan for diabetes mellitus.
Caring and developing a care plan for autism spectrum disorder.
Caring and developing a care plan for ADHD.
Caring and developing a care plan for special needs.
Caring for children with complex conditions/terminal diseases who may have a
DNR order.
Caring for homebound children (disability and cannot attend school).
Caring for teenage girls who are pregnant and attending school (seems like
primary prevention but is tertiary because adolescent pregnancies are high
risk).
