6026 Assessment 1

, Position On Depression Among Geriatric Populations

Geriatric depression is a crucial health concern that has a direct impact on the health of a

population. While depression is one of the most prevalent mental health disorders affecting the

elderly, it remains unrecognized in approximately 50% of patients (WHO, 2023a). According to

WHO, the global prevalence of depressive disorder among the elderly is approximately 5.7%

(World Health Organization, 2023b). It is rarely diagnosed since its symptoms are similar to

those of other diseases and diseases associated with aging. Poor physical health and depressive

symptoms have a vicious cycle where chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes,

and arthritis worsen in patients suffering from both physical and mental illnesses (Herrera et al.,

2021). Depression symptoms worsen the quality of life by causing social exclusion, low physical

activity, and cognitive decline, including dementia.

significant improvement in both mental and physical health. Treating depression early and in a

comprehensive manner can help improve memory and other brain functions, chronic disease

self-care, and social and physical activities. However, challenges such as stigma, access to

absence of complications and nonadherence to prescribed regimes (Chang, 2022). When older

adults are provided with mental health care, then there will be improved health status, quality of
