Trend in the ionisation energy of Group 2 - 1st and 2nd ionisation energies of
Group 2 decreases down the group.
- extra electron shell
- inner electrons shield the outer electrons from the attraction of the nucleus.
- the outer electrons are also further away from the nucleus as the atomic radius
increases
- this reduces the electrostatic attraction between the the nucleus and outer
electron, means its easier to remove the outer electron, so ionisation energy
decreases.
Why is the 3rd ionisation energy greater than the 1st and 2nd ionisation energies?
- - because the rremoval of a third electron tro form a 3+ ion, requires a lot more
energy
- electron has to be removed against the attraction of a much larger effective
nuclear charge
