Atomic structure - Topic 1 Edexcel A Level
Chemistry 2024
Atomic mass - Number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom

Atomic number - Number of protons in the nucleus of an atom

Isotopes - - Atoms with the same number of protons and a different number of
neutrons

- Atoms with the same atomic number but different atomic mass

- They have similar chemical reactivity as they have the same number of electrons
in the outer shell

Ion - An atom or group of atoms that have lost or gained an electron

Periodicity - The repeating pattern of chemical and physical properties of the
elements across a period

Mass spectrometry - An analytical method that measures the relative abundance
of different isotopes in a sample by measuring their masses.

The y-axis is the relative abundance and the x-axis is the m/z ratio.

Ions with a charge of 1+ are formed.

m/z ratio - - Mass to charge ratio

- This is equal to the mass for ions with a charge of 1+

Emission specrum - The pattern of lines seen on photographic film when a sample
is heated and the light emitted is passed through a prism.

Each element has its own emission spectrum. Some of the lines may may not be in
the visible region.

How is an emission spectrum produced? - 1. Electrons absorb energy and so
become excited.

2. They move from a low energy ground state close to the nucleus to a high
energy state further away from the nucleus.
