CDC WORKPLACE VIOLENCE EXAM
2024-2025

workplace violence - Respond to any physical attack, threatening behavior, or
verbal abuse that occurs in the workplace.

Workplace violence types - ANSWER 1: criminal intent

2. Customer/client.

3. Worker-to-worker

4. Personal relationship.

criminal intent - answer Type 1 violence occurs when the attacker has no legitimate
relationship with the business or its employees and is typically committing a crime
in addition to the violence (robbery, shoplifting, trespassing). For example:

A nurse was assaulted in the hospital's parking garage.

A home health care nurse gets mugged while making a home visit.

In health care settings, Type I violence is less common than other types of violence.

Customer/client - ANSWER Type 2 violence is the most prevalent in hospital
settings. This course, known as CLIENT-ON-WORKER VIOLENCE, takes into
account the customer/client interaction, which includes patients, family members,
and visitors. According to research, this sort of violence is most common in
emergency and psychiatric care facilities, waiting rooms, and geriatric settings,
although it is not confined to these. This training focuses mostly on the prevention
of Type 2 violence.

Worker-on-worker: ANSWER Type 3 violence amongst coworkers is also known
as lateral or horizontal aggression. It includes bullying, which typically manifests

, as verbal and emotional abuse that is unjust, disrespectful, vengeful, and/or
humiliating, but it can also lead to homicide. Worker-on-worker violence is
frequently directed at those considered "lower on the food chain," such as a
supervisor to supervisee or a doctor to nurse, however, peer-to-peer violence is also
widespread. This course investigates the causes of worker-on-worker violence in
healthcare settings.

Personal Relationship - Answer Type 4 violence occurs when the perpetrator has an
outside relationship with the nurse that crosses over into the workplace. For
example, a nurse's spouse follows her to work, orders her home, and threatens her,
which has consequences for not only the nurse but also her coworkers and patients.
This course does not expressly address Type 4 violence, but many of the concepts,
tactics, and protocols described here are also applicable to Types 2 and 3.
