What is the purpose of LINA01? Ans The purpose of the course is to provide basic linguistic research tools that will explain in a scientific way why some constructions are correct/incorrect in a given language/languages. What is linguistics? Ans the scientific study of language What is linguistic knowledge? Ans It is the unconscious knowledge. When people speak a specific language and are able to tell what constructions are correct/incorrect in that language, but they are not able to explain why. What is competence? Ans A person's unconscious knowledge of what can and can't be said in their language. What is performance? Ans It is how the performer actually uses his/her linguistic competence to produce and understand speech. What is Mental Grammar? Ans It is a mental system of rules that is stored in the mind of a native speaker. These rules allow us to interpret novel sentences that we've never heard before.
