What is pathophysiology? - the study of abnormalities in physiologic functioning of living beings Pathophysiology is the base onto which all nursing care is provided "pathos" - suffering "physis" - Nature Etiology - study of the causes or reasons for phenomena - ID's casual factors and risk factors that may provoke disease or injury - Idiopathic: unknown cause - Iatrogenic: caused from medical treatment/procedure ex: tardive dyskensia, IV Infiltration Pathogenesis - development or evolution of disease, from initial stimulus to ultimate expression of manifestations of the disease - describes how etiologies lead to clinical manifestations ex: heart attack - means the heart is not work - due to lack of flowing O2 Clinical Manifestations - The presentation of the disease, as broken down into Signs and Symptoms Syndrome: A group of Signs and Symptoms for which the etiology has not yet been determined What are signs - Objective manifestations of disease observed or measured by others EX: broken bones, bruising, vitals What are symptoms - Subjective feelings of abnormality in the body EX: Nausea, pain, anxiety Acute - short-lived with severe clinical manifestations 3 months or less Chronic - Months to years, may result from acute condition. Longer than 3 months Exacerbation - a sudden increase in severity of disease or signs or symptoms Remission - decrease in severity, signs, or symptoms *this may indicate that disease is cured
