Critical Essay on International Human Rights Law

Introduction

International human rights law is a body of international law designed to promote
and protect human rights at the international, regional, and domestic levels. Rooted
in the aftermath of World War II, this area of law aims to ensure that individuals'
fundamental freedoms and rights are upheld regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or
state boundaries. This essay will define international human rights law and
distinguish it from humanitarian law, international criminal law, and international
refugee law.

International Human Rights Law

International human rights law comprises treaties, customary international law,
general principles, and other sources of international law that establish legal
standards for the treatment of individuals. Key documents include the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), International Covenant on Civil and
Political Rights (ICCPR), and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and
Cultural Rights (ICESCR). Together, these documents form the International Bill
of Human Rights.
