The media is the technology used in communicating to a mass audience without personal
contact. It can also be defined as the organisations associated with mas communication and
the products of the organisations.
There is a divide of the media existing of traditional media and new media. The traditional
media is old types of media such as newspapers and terrestrial tv channels. They often give a
uniformed message which lacks interactivity.
The new media is an interactive kind that involves images, text and sounds. Examples of this
are phones and social media. Social media is online based media that allows people to
interact with others. examples of social media are Facebook and Instagram. Social networks
of friends are built up and information is quickly shared and exchanged.
Statistics

The equality act 2010 forbids the expression of opinions that are discriminative against an
ethnic group of religious group.
The official secrets act makes it a crime to report official government activity without
permission.
OFCOM regulates TV and radio. It has to ensure that there is a large choice of different
channels and shows. It has to protect the audience from offensive and harmful content, they
act as a safeguarding company.
The BBC is governed by the BBC trust. The trust works to ensure the BBC stays unbiased
and accountable to license fee-payers. It is also somewhat regulated by OFCOM.
IPSO regulates newspapers and magazines. It replaced the PCC which was shut down after
its inadequate response to the Leveson inquiry. They aim to maintain the standards of
journalism by ensuring information is accurate and not invasive or intrusive. It deals with
complaints about these rules being broken.
The government influences media output by the fact they hold conferences with journalists
which allow them to say what they want people to know. Furthermore, leaks from ‘sources
close to the government’ allow the media to tell the public certain snippets of information.
Government spin doctors attempt to hide bad news by releasing new information about a
sensational event.
